Luckily the speakers did not have to sit on the platform but on reserved seats on the front row. This was kinder and less stressful. A few well presented and efficient lady speakers opened the conference and outlined the importance of the benchmarking initiative. Unfortunately there were problems on the underground that morning and some delegates were late. During the first couple of hours there was a steady stream of latecomers and eventually the hall was filled to capacity. As my slot approached I tried to keep as calm as possible and kept my breathing slow, picturing that flickering candle. I knew I would get through this and would be so happy to do so. The thought of my feelings afterwards were the driving force that gave me confidence to take my place on the stage and deliver my long awaited presentation. With a deep breath and a final check of the microphone, I began my talk, entitled ‘What matters to patients’.
